Both CONGU and WHS are fully compliant, fully supported handicap methods, and choosing between them isn't about which is "better", it's about which suits how your group actually plays.
How CONGU Works
CONGU groups players into handicap categories, each with its own reduction multiplier and buffer zone. Score inside your buffer and your handicap holds steady; score better and it reduces by a fixed increment for that category. It's simple to explain to a new member in a sentence or two, and it rewards consistency within a band.
How WHS Works
WHS instead tracks a rolling set of score differentials, averaging your best eight of your most recent twenty rounds. It's more responsive to a genuine run of form, and because it's the system used internationally, an index earned under WHS travels cleanly to any course, anywhere.
Comparing the Two
- CONGU suits smaller, closer-knit groups where simplicity and a stable, predictable handicap matter most.
- WHS suits groups that want international portability and a handicap that reacts quickly to real improvement.
Deciding Before You Set Up Your First Group
Neither choice is permanent, but it's worth deciding upfront rather than migrating a live group later. Different sections within the same club can run different methods side by side without any conflict, so a seniors' section on CONGU and an open section on WHS work perfectly well under one account.
